Have you ever had a
large tree hit your house? I hope not, because, I have! A few
weeks ago, Monday morning, my son was in his room getting ready
for school. The wind was blowing, the sky was gray and rainy fog
enveloped the neighborhood. A sudden and loud crack got his attention.
As he looked out the window, the sight of a one hundred foot tall
cedar tree falling toward him gave him reason to pause. The whole
house shook with a loud thud as the crown crashed against the
roof, (breaking off the top) bringing a very large and spear like
section of tree to rest between 2 windows. This miraculous placement
left but 3" of space on each side of the offending vegetation.
The subsequent damage turned out to be minimal (relatively speaking
that is). Fortunately, no one was hurt during all of the excitement
and my son has a new and exciting story to share with future generations.
Where did the tree
come from? There is a seasonal creek running behind our house
that eroded the soil away from the base of my neighbor's cedar.
What's the moral of this story? Take the time to walk around the
neighborhood and look for potential hazards, before they strike.
It's a lot more fun to meet your neighbors and discuss future
scenarios, than to introduce yourself with a mouthful of bad news.
An ounce of prevention IS worth a pound of cure!
