Do you remember the good old days when that knock on the front
door meant that a salesman was going door to door selling the
next best thing to sliced bread?
Here's a scenario that
doesn't quite work out so well.
Home inspectors
come calling - It's a scam people often fall for: A "home
inspector" is passing by and sees that your roof is leaking.
He and his helper offer to take a quick look, and one of several
possible scenarios unfolds -- while you're occupied with one,
the other relieves you of your valuables, or a quick spray with
a concealed water bottle makes for instant "water damage."
In the second case, the hustler offers to fix your roof, nails
on a few shingles, cashes your check and is gone before you realize
you've been had. Professional home inspectors are highly trained
and experienced individuals who can produce credentials that back
up their claim. (Offering to make repairs is against their strict
code of ethics.) Look for the California Real Estate Inspection
Association (CREIA) Logo and ask questions. CREIA celebrates 30
years of consumer protection through quality home inspections
this year.

home inspectors and their standards of practice through this professional
organization's web site. www.creia.org
