Have you ever wondered
why there are holes with screens over them on the lower outside
walls of your home? As a kid, I thought the builder ran out of
wood and forgot to cover them up! After all, they just allow lots
of cold mountain air and furry woodland creatures into the place
where I intend to build a workshop some day. Right? Not exactly!
Hi, I'm Larry Olson
of Close To Home Inspections. I spend my time helping people learn
about the home they are preparing to buy or preparing to sell.
Although, most everyone lives in a home, I find that very few
people actually know much about the place they call home. Let
me expand on that a little.
Those holes that I
mentioned are actually air vents that are an important feature
in the safe and functional operation of your most valued asset.
Air vents serve two
main purposes:
- To reduce the amount
of moisture buildup under the house where moisture can cause
deterioration of wood surfaces. (moisture attracts insects too)
- To provide enough
air for fuel/air burning appliances (such as water heaters and
forced air heaters) to burn efficiently and within the safety
parameters engineered into their design.
A general rule to follow
is one square foot of ventilation for each 150 square feet of
floor space.
So, you see- It's very
important to allow those openings to remain open. Just one more
thing, be sure each of the vents has a screen. You don't want
furry woodland creatures getting into your future workshop.
