Have you ever wondered
where your forced air heater's filter is? Hmmm? As a kid, my brothers
and I loved to see how much small stuff we could send into that
big wind tunnel wall vent that was sucking air whenever the heater
came on. Let me explain;
Every natural gas fueled,
forced air heater takes air from inside the home; this is called
"return air" and circulates it past a heat exchanger
(enclosed burners) where it can be heated. This air is then redistributed
throughout the home via vents located in each room. Somewhere
in the system is either a disposable or reusable filter. This
filter's job is to catch the dust and other small particles like
those you see floating in that late afternoon ray of sunlight.
Now back to the question of location. Most air filters are located
in the forced air unit itself or in that large vent you've been
ignoring in the hallway, sometimes both. Do yourself, your family
and your heater a big favor. Find the filter, and for around $3.50,
replace it if it's disposable or wash it if it's reusable. The
harder your heater works, the more gas it burns and the sooner
it is likely to wear out.
